Andy Burnham after Makerfield by-election win

Labour politician Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election in northwest England, returning to the UK Parliament after nearly a decade away.

Burnham received nearly 55% of the 45,510 votes cast in a field of more than a dozen candidates and finished more than 9,000 votes ahead of Reform UK candidate Rob Kenyon. The result gives Burnham a seat in the House of Commons after serving as mayor of Greater Manchester.

Burnham, 56, said after the result that the election offered a chance for Britain to change direction. The by-election outcome comes after recent local elections in which Reform UK won seats covering the Makerfield constituency.
