Anthropic said it has taken its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models offline after a U.S. government directive required the company to suspend access to the models for foreign nationals.

The company said the order meant it had to disable the two models for all customers to ensure compliance, while access to its other models remains unchanged. A U.S. official confirmed that the Commerce Department issued the export control directive covering Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

Anthropic said it is working to restore access as soon as possible. The action marks a significant U.S. step to restrict access to advanced AI models through export controls.

Reports said the administration moved after reviewing access to Anthropic’s latest models and sent the company a letter on Friday informing it that the Fable and Mythos models would be subject to broad export control rules.
