Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on a rare visit to North Korea and held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to official readouts from the meeting.

The statements said the two leaders reaffirmed plans to deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen strategic ties, including safeguarding shared interests and protecting sovereignty, security, and development interests.

Xi said China would maintain its commitment to supporting cooperation with North Korea and work to bring relations to a higher level, the official Chinese summary said. Public accounts of the talks did not reference North Korea’s nuclear program.
